Products can be classified into main or "top level" categories, which in turn can have sub-categories. You can have several levels of sub-categories if required, though we advise keeping the number of levels to a minimum (and no more than 4 from an SEO point of view).

1. Go to Add Category or click the button to add a category in Product Manager.

2. Enter your category details.

Make sure you enter a description and upload an image.

3. Select "Top Level" if this is a main category, or if this is a subcategory select the category under which this one will appear.

4. Enter a product filter URL

Set a Product Filter URL for the category name. This is clicked on when visitors use the product filter search facility and it directs them to this category. It will default to the name you enter which is generally fine, as long as you have unique category names across the entire store. However, if you use categories with the same name (for example sub-categories in different branches) then you can set a different product filter URL so that the system sends the visitor to the right category.

5. Enter your SEO tags for your category otherwise it will use default meta tags based on the category name followed by the store name.

6. Optionally, enter product size view overrides.

Normally these are left blank.

These settings allow you to change the sizes of the product box and images on the product category pages.

Hiding Categories

You can set categories so that they are hidden on the front end of the website using this field on the category Add/Edit screen:

Hide this category from the website.

NOTE: Products inside the category are not hidden and can still be found e.g. through search, other categories, quick shop, etc. An example use case is where you have products in a secondary promotional category for exclusion from coupon discounts.
